One of the main aspects of search engine optimization is link popularity, which is determined by the number of links from other sites that point to a site; more quality links brings better popularity. How can one achieve this? Webmasters manually trade links with related sites. This, however, can be a very time consuming process: you send emails to webmasters asking them to trade links; then you wait for their response. This process is slow and tedious. Many webmasters frequent link exchange directories to try and build up their link popularity by searching for other webmasters who are listed in the directory and who are also looking to trade links. Many of these link exchange directories charge a fee for access to their webmaster database or directory, but free ones exist. Link exchanges can sometimes be useful, but the practice is risky: trading links with the wrong site can have a negative impact on a website. The best bet is to maintain a "strict" linking method that neither accepts links from unrelated websites nor posts links to unrelated web sites.
